Preventing Structural Foundation Damage.

The key to preventing foundation damage is the soil. If the soil is expanded when the foundation is poured it will shrink when it dries out. If the soil is contracted when the foundation is poured, it will expand when wet. If the soil is within proper tolerances when poured, then it should be kept there.

Shrinking soil removes support from the foundation. Swelling soil will lift the foundation. When possible, the soil should be kept at constant moisture around the house all year long.
