Slab Foundations

Slab Foundations

There are basically two types of slab foundations used in North Texas. For residential construction, the monolithic slab is used almost exclusively. The monolithic slab is a slab and foundation which is poured at one time, or as one pour. The residential slab is usually about twenty Inches from the brick line down to the bottom. The vertical footing is usually about twelve inches wide at the bottom and is tapered up, to maybe, 14 inches at the base of the slab. The slab part of the foundation is usually four inches to 6 inches thick. Think of a rectangular cereal bowl turned upside down and pushed into the soil. The slab is often thickened to maybe 12" under a bearing wall. See pictures.

The slab/footing is reinforced with either steel rebar or in newer homes post tension cables. The reinforcement is to add strength to the concrete and prevent cracks from separating.
